WASHINGTON --- The 2024 Great Navy Campout, sponsored by T-Mobile, has officially concluded its 9th annual celebration of outdoor recreation, providing military personnel and eligible MWR patrons with a summer full of camping adventures. From June through October, this initiative, hosted by Commander, Navy Installations Command (CNIC) HQ Navy MWR Community Recreation and Liberty-Single Sailor programs, took place across 20 Navy installations worldwide, with over 1,500 participants embracing the outdoors.

The event at Naval Base San Diego set the tone for the summer, offering an accessible introduction to camping at Admiral Baker Picnic Grounds. Families gathered at Admiral Baker Picnic Grounds, where MWR staff guided first-time campers through the process of setting up tents and navigating the camping experience. The focus was on educating attendees about the joys and responsibilities of camping, ensuring everyone left with lasting skills and knowledge. Activities like kite flying, archery, and a hands-on botany class allowed participants to enjoy nature in a fun and educational way, while the “Leave No Trace” principles taught campers about environmental stewardship. Feedback from participants highlighted the event’s ability to cater to a variety of ages and interests, ensuring a welcoming atmosphere for all.

Meanwhile, the event at Naval Station Newport brought together 124 participants, including 73 children and 63 adults, for a night under the stars at Carr Point Recreation Area. Families were equipped with tents, lanterns, and camping gear, and enjoyed crafts, games, and outdoor fun. The "Save the Bay" program brought local marine life to the event, offering a unique hands-on experience with a traveling touch tank. The National Park Service also joined in, presenting a Night Sky program and fishing workshops, allowing families to learn about local wildlife and skills like fishing. A movie under the stars, lawn games, and of course, “smores galore” added to the event's festive atmosphere.

In addition to the campouts, Navy MWR hosted the second year of the Pledge to Camp giveaway, engaging over 1,500 participants. The giveaway encouraged campers to share their experiences for a chance to win a portion of the $10,000 prize pool, which included two monthly $500 gift cards and a grand prize of $2,500. The initiative provided even more incentive for families to embrace the outdoors and share their adventures.

The 2024 Great Navy Campout successfully created lasting memories, strengthened connections, and introduced military families to the pleasures of camping. Navy MWR looks forward to continuing this tradition of outdoor adventure in 2025.
