WASHINGTON – From February 24 to March 7, 2025, Navy Region Southwest hosted a series of impactful comedy events as part of the "1 Degree of Separation" comedy tour, aimed at breaking the stigma surrounding mental health challenges like depression and suicide. The performances, part of a larger tour initiated by Commander, Navy Installation Command (CNIC) Fleet and Family Readiness (FFR), took place at multiple locations, including Naval Base (NAVBASE) Point Loma, Naval Auxiliary Landing Field San Clemente Island, Naval Air Station (NAS) North Island, NAS Lemoore and NAVBASE San Diego. With more than 10 performances, the shows reached hundreds of active duty and reserve Sailors, their families and Department of Defense (DoD) civilians.

The "1 Degree of Separation" comedy tour uses humor to address the serious issues surrounding mental health. Through personal stories of struggle with depression and suicide, the comedians aim to break the silence, reduce stigma and promote healing. The key message: depression and mental health challenges are just one degree of separation away—whether you're dealing with them directly or someone you know is.

At the NAS North Island show Sailors gathered at the galley for a lunchtime performance that encouraged self-reflection and open dialogue about mental health. The show created a place to connect, share experiences and have meaningful conversations about this crucial topic.

For Sailors like Aviation Electronics Technician Airman Apprentice (ATAA) Keyshuan Steele, the show was a valuable opportunity for growth. “My biggest takeaway is being able to self-reflect on what other people do to help and hinder me and what I do to help and hinder myself,” he said. Reflecting on the experience, Steele also recommended similar events be offered at other stages of service, such as during ‘A’ and ‘C’ Schools. He added that it felt good watching the show.

Comedian and U.S. Navy veteran Jason Resler, who performs as part of the "1 Degree of Separation" tour, shared his personal connection to the message. “If it helps one person, this is going to be worth it,” said Resler. “What I didn’t realize is that one person, is myself. It means a lot to give back to service members, to be part of a team again.”

The "1 Degree of Separation" comedy tour is an essential component of Navy FFR's ongoing efforts to strengthen Sailors’ resilience, readiness and connections. These events not only raise awareness about mental health but also foster a culture of openness and support within the Navy community, promoting healing and self-reliance.

Since its inception, the "1 Degree of Separation" troupe has performed more than 80 shows for a variety of audiences, including first responders, medical professionals, college students and other military branches. Now, they’re bringing their important message of mental health awareness to the Navy, offering service members and their families a much-needed place for reflection and healing. This tour is also part of the Navy’s 250th Anniversary celebrations, highlighting the Navy's global impact and commitment to community engagement.
