WASHINGTON --- Joint Expeditionary Base Little Creek-Fort Story (JEBLC-FS) Morale, Welfare and Recreation (MWR) offers a wide range of programs and services, but according to the Callicoat and Rivera families, none are more valuable than those provided by the JEBLC-FS MWR Library. For these two families, the library has become an essential resource as they navigate the homeschooling environment.

Allison Callicoat, a Navy spouse for 13 years, is married to an Aviation Electrician at NAS Oceana, and they have three children. Similarly, Alyssa Rivera, who has also been a Navy spouse for 13 years, and her husband, a Corpsman at JEB Little Creek-Fort Story, have two children. Both families have been stationed in Virginia Beach, VA, for around two years, embracing the area for its beaches and other outdoor opportunities. The JEBLC-FS MWR Library has played a pivotal role in their homeschooling journey, offering a variety of programs and flexible resources that meet their needs.

The Callicoat and Rivera families are enthusiastic participants in the library's offerings, which include borrowing books and movies to support their homeschooling schedules. Some of their favorites include “Diary of a Wimpy Kid,” “Dog Man” and “Magic Tree House,” just to name a few. “Many of our Navy neighbors were unaware of the JEBLC-FS Library's offerings, but we are strong advocates of the JEBLC-FS Library programs,” says Rivera. Additionally, their children regularly participate in the Homeschool Hang program and the Summer Explorers program, which often feature special guests from local educational organizations.

Beyond the library’s programs and events, their favorite on-base activities include visiting other MWR locations, such as playgrounds, beaches and the movie theater, and are excited about splashing and swimming at the JEBLC Gator Pool. Their advice to new Navy families in the area is to conduct research, connect with the right people, and explore the installation’s Facebook pages. “There are more resources available than you might think — more through MWR and additional therapy resources,” emphasized Callicoat.

With many other Navy families homeschooling their children in the area, Callicoat and Rivera are excited about any expansions of MWR services. “We particularly value the vibrant homeschool community in the region and are hopeful that MWR will consider offering homeschool PE or similar physical activity programs in the future,” expressed Rivera.
