Virtual Single Sailor Program Brings Sailors Together with Exciting Online Events

WASHINGTON --- Navy Morale, Welfare and Recreation (MWR)’s Virtual Single Sailor Program (VSSP) is transforming how Sailors connect and unwind through engaging online events. From game shows to live performances, the program offers a range of activities to help build a supportive virtual community for Sailors.

VSSP expands on the in-person programming offered through Liberty Centers, which have long been a place for Single Sailors to relax, connect and enjoy activities together. Earlier this year, VSSP also introduced a pilot program in Hampton Roads, Virginia, to provide free and subsidized high-speed Wi-Fi access in selected unaccompanied housing facilities, enhancing connectivity for Sailors and ensuring they can take full advantage of the program’s virtual offerings. Now, with virtual events, Sailors can join from anywhere, bringing the Liberty spirit directly to their screens.

The kick-off week in September featured a high-energy bingo night hosted by a DJ, drawing in Sailors eager for some friendly competition. Austin King, a Sailor who attended, shared his excitement about the event, saying, “It was fun to be able to log into some cool online games and relax after being at work all day. I met some new people and had fun teaming up. It was a good distraction from scrolling through social media! The music and graphics were insane and made the time fly! I look forward to playing again.”

VSSP also presented "Murder Mystery Strike Three." This immersive 360-degree crime-solving adventure challenged participants to take on the role of detective, with just 45 minutes to scour the virtual crime scene, gather evidence and issue warrants. The event tested Sailors’ problem-solving skills, offering a thrilling escape and a chance to connect with others as they pieced together clues to crack the case.

In addition to the kick-off week events, VSSP has since hosted a series of unique activities, including interactive improv with battle rap group Free Daps, an interactive cooking lesson focused on single Sailor lifestyle with chef Jodi Greebel, and an illusion event hosted by acclaimed mentalist Joel Meyers, who captivated participants with his stunning tricks.  VSSP’s calendar is packed with more events through November and December, and plans are already underway to expand the program with fresh and engaging virtual events throughout 2025.

Each event is thoughtfully crafted to provide Sailors a unique opportunity to get involved from the comfort of their own space and to have fun. Brooke Haley, Navy MWR Liberty and Community Recreation Program Manager, expressed her excitement about the program’s success. “We are thrilled to provide Sailors with a new creative programming lineup.  VSSP is all about providing a space where Sailors can have fun, connect and build friendships, even from a distance.”

While the program focuses on Sailors in the Hampton Roads area, all events are open to all E-6 and below service members. With more events on the calendar in the coming months, VSSP is set to continue its mission of creating a supportive and entertaining virtual community for Sailors.
