January 24, 2023 | Story by Megan Trexler | Commander, Navy Installations Command

WASHINGTON - In May 2020 Navy Morale, Welfare and Recreation (MWR) launched the Navy MWR Esports program, designed to provide Sailors around the world with entertainment and recreational opportunities through online competitive tournaments.

To date, Navy MWR has hosted and live streamed 52 tournaments, capturing over 9.6 million live views on the Navy MWR Twitch channel. More than 3,500 Sailors and other eligible MWR patrons have participated in individual and team-based competitions with game titles including Call of Duty, Halo Infinite Multiplayer, Madden NFL and Rocket League.

“The future of the Navy MWR Esports program is exciting and demonstrates how Navy MWR has evolved. The team is working hard to provide groundbreaking content for worldwide virtual programs,” said Refugio Orozco, Commander, Navy Installations Command’s Fleet and Family Readiness Marketing and Communications Branch Head.

Navy MWR will host several esports tournaments throughout 2023, starting with twelve tournaments in February. “We’re kicking off the year strong. During the upcoming winter series, Sailors and MWR patrons will go head-to-head in ten tournaments, featuring fan favorites, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare II and Street Fighter V,” said Brooke Haley, Commander, Navy Installations Command’s Fleet and Family Readiness Community Recreation and Liberty Program Manager.

Navy MWR is also planning to host two Call of Duty mobile tournaments in Spring 2023, marking the first time Navy MWR will host a mobile esports tournament. “We are excited to continue the momentum and offer relevant programming, with a two-part mobile series,” said Orozco. “This tactical gameplay is tremendously detailed, advanced in its genre, while still being accessible to anyone,” he continued.

Watch as Sailors from around the world compete in Call of Duty: Modern Warfare II Feb 16, 17-20, and Street Fighter V Feb 23, 25-28. The Navy MWR Esports Winter 2023 Series will be live streamed on the Navy MWR Twitch channel and will feature top tier commentators. Competition is open to authorized MWR patrons.

“This is just the first of many esports tournaments that we’re planning this year,” expressed Haley. “Stay tuned for information on the Navy MWR website or Navy Fleet and Family Readiness Facebook page.”
