FFSC Federal Hiring Summit Continues Navy’s Commitment to Providing Career Services

September 5, 2024 | Story by Naomi Wilkins | Commander, Navy Installations Command

Navigating the federal job landscape can be daunting, but the Family Employment Readiness Program (FERP) has been instrumental in supporting recruitment efforts by hosting virtual hiring summits since 2019.

The most recent event was the Navy Hiring Summit in November 2023, which featured presentations by Navy employers, a series of webinars and virtual job booths. Building on this success, the Navy expanded its efforts in July 2024 by launching the first-ever Fleet and Family Services Center (FFSC) Federal Hiring Summit, held over four days.

Leveraging past best practices, the summit also aimed to align with the Employment Readiness Study to boost spouse employment and connect job seekers with federal hiring officials. “FERP has worked endlessly to develop a hiring summit that provides career services to spouses, transitioning service members and veterans,” said Ebonie Powe, Family Employment Readiness Program Analyst for Commander, Navy Installations Command (CNIC), who played a pivotal role in coordinating the summit.

The agenda featured multiple employer presentations from various government agencies, including the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, U.S. Department of Justice, Naval Criminal Investigative Service (NCIS) and the Social Security Administration, to name a few. “We had so many agencies apply to participate in the summit that we had to ask many of them to apply again for the next one we are organizing. That’s how much enthusiasm there is for this kind of hiring platform. We are really aiming to pivot and cater to our audience and that means a virtual platform,” explained Powe.

Educational sessions were also a key component of the agenda, providing attendees with valuable information on topics like military spouse opportunities. The Office of Personnel Management (OPM) led a session on navigating USAJobs.com, offering tips on creating a federal resume.

“The Navy hosts these educational sessions at the annual summit and are vital for attendees to capitalize on. They assist them in getting started in their career with the federal government, or provide the tools needed to move within government agencies,” Powe added.

With federal hiring remaining a top priority, the turnout for the FFSC Federal Hiring Summit was impressive, with nearly 700 spouses, transitioning service members and veterans attending 40 sessions. Career Corner Coaches reviewed and edited 71 resumes, resulting in a 10% increase in job seekers looking one-on-one resume assistance – a major accomplishment for the Navy. “We are excited for the next event that will take place in September 2024,” said Powe.

The next event is the Virtual FFSC Job Fair Remote Jobs, September 17-19, 2024. For registration details, visit mynavyfamily.com.
